Burney Yard Rebuild - Yard Tracks Complete

Am Samstag habe ich den yard soweit fertig gebaut. Als nächstes folgt die Stromversorgung und der Ausleger auf AmericaN.

On Saturday I finished the track work. The next step will be wiring the modules and to build the AmericaN Standard module.

Das 40cm breite und 90cm lange Anschlussmodul für den Übergang auf American wurde gebaut. Ich habe mit Flexgleisen mal den ungefähren Verlauf modelliert.

I built the 40cm wide and 90cm long connection module for the transition to AmericaN - Standard.
I used some flex track to show the possible 50cm radius.

Am Ende des Yards wurde die Dreiwegeweiche positioniert.

At the ende of the yard I got the three way turn out in position.

Die Gleise auf der westliche Seite des Yards sind ausgerichtet und aufgeklebt.

Die Gleisübergänge sind dank der 1mm breiten Kunststoffstreiben gut gelungen. Hier erkennt man auch gut die Aufteilung des Yards. Links storage, Mitte main und Siding, Rechts interchangen.

Themodule transition are automatically aligned because of the styrene spacers between the modules. I cut the rails with a 0.5mm disc. In the picture you can see the differnet yard sections: storage tracks on the left, main line with siding in the middle and the interchange track on the right.

Die lange drei Wege Weiche bietet den Interchange tracks auf einen bypass für durchfahrende Züge.

The long three way turn out gives the possibility to bypass the interchange tracks and directly move to the main.

Burney Yard Rebuild - New western turn outs and first tracks

Bei brütender Hitze bei 30°C habe ich noch schnell eine Stunde Zeit gehabt am Yard weiter zu bauen.

Yesterday evening my attic was heated up to 30°C! Perfect to work on the yard in underwear ;)

Als erstes wurde mit dem westlichen Modul begonnen. Die beiden neuen Weichen (links außen) wurden Platziert und direkt eingeklebt.

At first I started laying the new tracks on the western yard module. Both new turn outs were placed and glued.

Um ein Waagerechtes plan aufliegendes Gleiszu erhalten habe ich vor dem Modulübergang die Schwellen entfernt. Diese werden dann später wieder ergänzt.

To get an horizontal track alignment I cut away some ties before and after the module transition. These will be replaced later.

Der erste Modulübergang ist geschafft. Alle yard Gleise liegen jetzt schön grade auf dem zweiten Modul. Die beiden vorderen Interchange Gleise fehlen noch, da mir die Leiterplattenschwellen ausgegangen sind.

The new tracks now cover the first middle yard module. Both interchange tracks are still missing because I ran out of PCB ties for the module transitions.

Endlich geht es mit dem yard weiter. Die Module sind ausgerichtet und der Streckenverlauf ist aufgezeichnet.

Finally I can continue my yard update.

Auf die Modulübergänge wurde aus Leiterplattenmaterial hergestellt Schwellen aufgeklebt. Die Schwellen haben genau den Atlas Code 55 Abstand zueinander.

I glued the PCB ties on the module transition. The PCB ties have the exact Atlas Code 55 tie spacing.

Hier kann man den 1mm Abstnad zwischen den Module erkennen. Später wird dieser beim zersägen entfallen.

Here you can see the 1mm distance between the module caused by the styrene strip. This free space will be eliminated when the tracks are be sawed.

Das erste Gleis wurde mit grozügigem Auftragen von Weissleim aufgeklebt. Die Gefäße dienen zum beschweren.

The first track was layed. I glued it with a good amount of white glue.

Auf dem Bild sieht man, dass die Leiterplattenschwellen etwas niedriger sind als die Atlas-Kunststoffschwellen. Der zwischenraum wird für das aufbringen von Lötzinn benötigt.

In the picture you can see a small spacing between the rails and the PCB ties. This is because the PCB ties are a little bit flatter then the Atlas ties. This space is needed for soldering the rails to the ties.

Burney Yard Rebuild - Benchwork

Am Wochenend fanden sich ein paar Minuten um am Yard weiter zu arbeiten.

At the weekend I could spend some minutes on working the yard.

Die Löcher der Weichenstromversorgungen wurden mit Heisskleber verschlossen.

I closed the holes of the turn out power wires with hot glues.

Die Leiterplattenschwellen waren ja mit 2 Komponentenkleber befestigt. Um das Holz nicht zu beschädigen habe ich den Kleber mit einem kleinen Flambierbrenner erhitzt und konnte dann die Schwellen mit einem Spachtel entfernen. An den dunklen Stellen ist Holzleim verbrannt.

The PCB ties were glued with 2 component epoxy to the wood. To prevent the wood from a water flood I used a small gas lighter to get the glue liquid again. With a small scraper I could easily remove the ties and rest of the glue. At the burned black areas some wood glue catched fire.

Nach einer Bahndlung mit dem Bandschleifer sah der Übergang vom bisherigen Mittelmodul auf das neue Erweiterungsmodul so aus.

The picture shows the transition between the old middle module and the new extension after a treating with a belt sander.

Zwischen die Module habe 1mm breite Kunststoffstreifen gelegt um nachher beim Gleise verlegen einfach auftrennen zu können und die Gleise dann bündig zurückzufeilen.

Between the module I placed some 1mm thick styrene stripes. After the tracks are glued and the PCB ties at the transitions are soldered I can simple cut the tracks, then remove the styrene and sand the rails down to the exact edge of the module.

Alle Gleise haben jetzt einen 3cm breiten Abstand der den Atlas Code 55 #5 Weichen entspricht. Die Positionen der Gleise wurden mit einem Zollstock abgemessen und dann entlang der Wasserwaage aufgezeichnet.

All tracks now feature a 3cm wider spacing matiching to the Atlas Code 55 #5 turn outs. The positions of the tracks were measured with a yardstick and then painted on the module along a 2m level.

Burney Yard Rebuild - track plan update and track removal

Nach etwas Testbetrieb mit Papermill und Yard hab ich festgestellt, dass in der Mill sehr viele Umsetzvorgänge nötig sind um zum Beispiel die Woodchip gondolas zu entladen.

After some test operation on my paper mill with the yard, we noticed that many runaround steps were needed to operate the mill. Especially with woodchip gondolas.

Der obere Plan zeigt den aktuellen Zustand des yards. Oben sind vier stumpfgleis zum vorhalten von beladenen Wagen, frischen Leerwagen und bereits entladenen Wagen. Dann folgen ein arrival und ein departure Gleis und im Süden führt die main line am yard vorbei.

Nun folgt das Problem:

Ein 10 Wagen Zug mit beladenen woodchip gondolas fährt ein. Die Loks müssen weg (in eines der 4 Stumpfgleise, da ja main frei bleiben soll und auf departure schon ein paar Wagen bereit stehen) und die Rangiereinheit zieht den Zug in die paper mill auf die main. Dann wird der Zug umfahren und die Rangiereinheit zieht die hinteren 5 Wagen ab, fährt zurück bis hinter die östlichste paper mill Weiche und drückt dann die Wagen über den rotary dumper. Währenddessen stehen die anderen 5 Wagen noch auf der main. Wurden die Wagen entleert werden sie auf die switching spur der paper mill geschoben und der Vorgang wird für die verbleibenden 5 gefüllten Wagen wiederholt. Die Rangiereinheit muss dann wieder an das andere Endes des Zuges und die Wagen in eines des Abstellgleise drücken und später in die ausgehenden Züge verteilen. 

Dieser Vorgang ist ehr untypisch und betriebstechnisch nicht "rund", also habe ich den yard umkonzipiert. Er ist jetzt doubleended, besitzt eine kleine Service-Stelle, ein Siding für die main line und zudem noch einen Interchange mit einem langen switching lead, damit die anliefernden Loks umsetzen können. Zudem gibt es jetzt einen Übergang nach AmericaN und ich kann auf meinem Dachboden dort weitere Module anschließen. Die Yardkapazität hat sich auch erhöht.

The plan shows the current in service yard (4 single ended storage tracks, 1 arrival track , 1 departure track, 1 main line) and the updated to rebuild version with (4 double ended yard tracks, 1 main line, 1 siding with interchange access, 2 interchange tracks with standard change from AmericaN-industries to AmericaN and a small mow and service point for refueling and mobile repair service).

The new plan was developed because operation sessions showed that the single ended yard with only runarounds via the arrival and departure track were not eficient. most of the time cars were still standing on the a7d tracks so no easy running around was posisble (only via main line). Also all cars needed to be pulled into the mill main track, then sperated and many more push/pull moves were needed. This was especially valid for the woodchip gondoals. So an updated concept was needed. 

Los geht es mit dem Umbau. Es muss am östlichen Endes des Yard einen neue Weichenstraße ergänzt werden.

Let's go. Some new turn outs are needed at the eastern end of the yard. I chose #5 for the storage tracks (like on the western side) and #7 for the sinding.

Das interchange Track bekommt eine dreiwege Weiche. Oben erkennt man den Abgang zur serive /mow area.

The interchange track will feature a three way turn out. At the back you can find the turn out for the loco service/mow track.

Alle Gleise außer der Weichenstraße wurden bereits entfernt. Die Module wurde jetzt alle mit Passdübeln ausgestattet, um einen schnelleren Aufbau ohne viel ausrichten zu ermöglichen.

All track were removed, but the western turn outs. All modules are now featuring position tips for an easier placing and faster assembly at Fremo meetings.

Lookout junction - more progress

In Lookout junction wurde das westliche Gleis noch einmal mit diversen Streumaterial nachbearbeitet, um zu zeigen dass dieses Gleis ehr selten benutzt wird.

In Lookout  Junction I applied another layout of different turfs to the narrow western track of the siding. This should bring the effect of an nearly "unused" track.

Auch hier wurden die Gleise mit dem Woodland-Gleis-Rost-Stif behandelt.

Also in Lookout Junction the rails are now weathred with the woodland rust painter.

Zudem kam die erste welle dunkler Büsche und Sträucher hinzu.

I applied some new bushes to make th emodule look more realisitc... More details will be added.

More mill work

Beim letzten Post fehlten noch zwei weitere Bilder.

At my last post two more pictures were missing.

Gleise mit woodland Rost-Stift gealtert, Chemikalienanlieferung mit Modelliergips gestaltet, HO Tanks zersägt und angepasst.

Rails weathered with woodland rust painters (the colour on the picture ist to red, the real colour is more brown), new fine plaster for the chemicals reloading and some cut down HO tanks..

Ich bin auch endlich dazu gekommen die Öffnunf für den rotary dumper zu sägen.

Finalley I sawed the bay for the rotary dumper.

New concrete for the mill

Da mich mein Job mal wieder extrem anstrengend war, musste die Moba leider etwas zurück stecken. Aber auch kleine Schritte führen zum Erfolg. Also ging es darum eine große Fläche zu "zementieren".

My job took nearly all of my free time and kept me from working on the layout. But also small steps are even steps. The project was to build a huge "concrete" ground for the buildings of the main mill.

Als erste habe ich Evergreen Kunststoffstreifen aufgeklebt, um nach dem Gießen des Modelliergipses glatte Auflageflächen zu haben.

At first a glued some 1.6mm evergreen styreen strips to the wood to get exact borders for the modellin gplaster.

Weichen mussten extra geschützt werden.

Turn outs needed some extra protection.

Nach dem Gießen und abzeihen des Modelliergipses war eine schöne stabile Fläche entstanden.

After applying the modelling plaster a new solid leveled basement was created.
