 Spanish River Hydro Power

The module was fortified with a bottom layer that represents the water level.

Bridges and the overflow dam were placed to see how the cut out works.

The short KATO bridge was too long compared to the truss bridge above the overflow. The bridge was shortened to fit the scenery.

After a layer of primer the bridge received some weathring with powders.

While I had the powders on the desk I weathered the truss bridge, too.

The 3D printed dam was glued together, primered and received a base coat of concrete paint.

Placing the bridges and the dam on the module allowed a good view where the lake/river bed should go.

The top level of the module received some more cut outs.

A second level of brown wood was glued in to present the water level of the lake. The rocks were modled with plaster and packing styrofoam.

A second pair of feeder wires were added. 

 

For a first impression turfs and bushes were added.

Da Espanola ja transportabel ist, müssen die Gebäude eine Grundstabilität haben. Hierfür wurde aus 3mm Holzplatten der Grundkern gebaut.

Due to the fact that Espanola is transportable for modular meetings all building cores need to be constructed to survive some rough handling.

Die Seitenwände wurden mit 10x10mm Streben gegen die Rückwand gesichert. Hierauf wird später das Dach aus Polystyrol aufliegen.

The side walls are stabilized with 10x10mm wood pieces. Later the styrene roof will sit on these.

Unter die Evergreen metal Sidings kommt noch ein 10mm hohes Betonfundament.

The relocation of the log track allowed more space for the truck route to the log yard. In front of the track there will be a log loader and a log pile.

Durch das Umlegen des Holzentladegleises wurde mehr Platz für die LKW geschaffen, um den Holzsammelplatz zu erreichen. Vor dem Gleis finden Entlademaschinen und ein Holzstoss Platz.

Some lighting posts arrived and I checked where I can install them.

The height of the lighting poles look quiet good at eye level.

Die höheren Master wirken passend zur Szene.

The module lost its straighteness in the last 2 years and wound up at up to 3%. This was fixed by cutting lines into the fascia and then add some wood to the inner side.

Das Modul konnte auch wieder gerichtet werden nachdem es sich in den letzten 2 Jahren stark verzogen hatte. Ein Schnitt schaffte Platz. Von innen wurde Holz vorgesetzt und von Außen verschraubt und verspachtelt. Die Rückwand musste auch getauscht werden.

So update on the Dam section. The Dam was 3D printed and is a nearly 1:1 representation of the hydro power generation of the paper mill.

Das Stauwerk entstand im 3D Druck und entspricht in seiner Abmessungen und Form nahezu dem Vorbild.

To be more prototypical I removed the second switch of the log track.

Die zweite Weiche des Holzanlieferungsgleises wurde entfernt, um näher ans Vorbild zu gelangen.

On the 3rd section the two #10L switches were replaced with on #10R and one #10L too look more prototypical. Changes are now complete and scenery can start.

Die beiden #10L Eingangsweichen haben mich schon immer gestört da das main track über ein abzweigendes Gleis führte. Dies wurde geändert indem eine #10R und eine #10L eingesetzt wurden. Der Zug kann nun gerade über das Hauptgleis fahren und muss nicht mehr den Abzweig nehmen.

An extension to the left side was needed to switch the paperdock prototypical. So I added another module.

I started ballasting the first section of the module using ASOA fine ballast according to the Fremo AmericaN standard. Tracks were weathered with woodlands rust painters. some random ties received different brown to grey nuances.

Der erste Modulkasten wurde geschottert. Es kam nach Fremo AmericaN Norm wieder der schöne feine Gleisschotter von ASOA zum Einsatz. Die Gleise wurden auf dem ganzen Modul mit the rust color weathering painters von woodland gealtert. 

Some first plaster was applied and feeder wires soldered to the tracks. Switches are manually controlled by blue points.

Die Verladefläche vorm Versandlager wurde aufgebracht. Zudem wurde die Gleise mit Strom versorgt und blue points als Stellmechanismen installiert.

New Project - Espanola Paper Mill, Ontario, Canada

After the birth of my second son I felt that I wanted to come back to the hobby that was suspended. Not with that much power compared to the time before the kids, but small projects that are possible to finish.

So after some research of other nice places on the QGRY network other than the QCY Henry IV yard in Quebec, the Kruger Paper Mill in TR and the VT warehouse I found nice videos of QGRY engines that are in service on the Huron Central. This railroad operating in Ontario frequently uses QGRY engines.

Along the line is the DOMTAR Paper Mill in Espanola Ontario.


After some research I write mails with guys who worked on the HCRY and also operated the switching jobs in the papaer mill.

The modules were built with 12mm multiplex headplates and 8mm sides. The Module features an 15° angle. Track is soley Atlas Code 55 with #10 switches in the main line, #7 for spurs and #5 for the sharp spots into the buildings.

The track plan was designed in Anyrail and then printed and cut out.

The main line is in the middle. The western track are switching spurs, while the right tracks are siding and log track,

Tracks are glued and soldered to the module.

Lookout Junction

Um im meinem Heimlayout die Module nach Fremo AmericaN iNdsutries Norm und das Sägewerk nach Fremo AmericaN Norm verbindne zu können habe ich ein Übergangsmodul entwickelt. Das Modul bietet zudem ein Interchange-Gleis. Auf diesem Gleise kann die Class 1 Gesellschaft Wagen abstellen, welche dann von der Shortline zu den Betriebsstellen gebracht wird. Im Austausch kann dann auch die Shortline Wagen abstellen, welche dann von der Class 1 abtransportiert werden.

To connect my Fremo AmericaN Standard modules (McCloud Sawmill and Shasta Transit) with the Fremo AmericaN iNdustries Standard I developed an interchange concept. While Fremo meetings this module can be used to connetc my AmericaN iNdustries modules to the main line.

The Burney Storage Yard

Nach dem Fremo-Treffen in Lauffen stand fest, das ich den yard umbauen wollte um mindestens ein A/D-Gleis zu erhalten. Also ging die Planung dahin den yard umzudesignen, so dass er auch ohne die mill verwendet werden kann.

After the Fremo meeting in Lauffen I wanted to add an arrival/departure track to my yard. But this was just to hard to realise becaus of the turn out configuration. So I developed a new track plan that makes it possible to use the yard seperately even without the mill.

Die länge der yard Gleise kann für Fremo Treffen mit einem weiteren Modul verlängert werden.

N Scale Burney Paper Mill track plan

Die Konstruktionstechnischen Probleme der ersten Burney Paper Mill sorgten für einiges nachdenken bei mir. Nachdem fest stand, dass ich die paper mill noch einmal neu aufbauen würde, wurden möglichst viele Kritikpunkte angenommen und Lösungen geschaffen.

The mechanical problems of the first burney paper mill raised the idea in me to rebuild it and try to make it better. So here ist my track plan with many improvements.

Die paper mill wurde in drei Modulgruppen geteilt. Der main mill complex ist nun auch stand alone fähig und besitzt Fremo - AmericaN - iNdustries-Übergänge. Die Wassertanks und Becken wurden auf ein seperates Modul gesetzt, ebenso der storage yard. Für den yard gibt es auch noch ein 90cm Erweiterung für den Frmeo-Einsatz. Diese Konzeption erlaubt es auch die Wassertanks und den storage yard im Westen der mill anzuschließen oder auch alle Module eigenständig zu verwenden.

The paper mill was devided into three single groups. The first group ist the main mill complex with all the spots. the second module is just a piece of track used as a switching lead. At least there is the storage yard. the yard was upgraded with two additional arrival/departure tracks. All three sections can be used independent.

Pondosa Layout

So lange ich für die Burney Paper Mill noch auf Gleise warte, habe ich vor aus einem Restmodule 30*60cm und zwei wieteren 32*30cm Module ein Spiegel-Modul zu Cayton zu bauen. Das Modul wird in Anlehnung an die McCloud River RR Pondosa heißen und ein Holzverladung und einen Abzweig besitzen.

I'm currently waiting for some turn outs and tracks for the new Burney Paper Mill. So I decided to build a mirror module for Cayton for an easy transport. The module name will be Pondosa, CA connected to the McCloud River RR. The tracks will feature a track split and a log loading.

Cayton Dicalite

Da von Burney Paper Mill V1 nun die beiden 30cm Endmodule und zwei 60cm Mittelstücke keine Verwendung mehr hatten, entschied ich mich die Betriebsstelle Cayton Dicalite  der McCloud River zu redsignen und drei der vier Module dafür zu verwenden

 After redesigning the Burney Paper Mill 4 modules (two 30*30cm and two 30*60cm) were no more used. So I updated track plan for my McCloud River module Cayton Dicalite.

 This was the former module track plan. It was designed with a radius of 25cm according to the minimum radius of the Fremo - AmericaN - iNdustries standard.

 This is the new layout. The track radius ist now 55cm.

N-Scale Module Burney Splice

Das Modul Burney Splice wird benötigt um auf unserem Dachboden das Sägewerk und das Papierwerk gemeinsam aufstellen zu können. Zu diesem Zweck wird das Modul aus drei Segmenten bestehen und zwei fremo-AmericaN-iNdustires-Abgänge und einen Fremo-AmericaN-Abgang haben.

I need this module to place the sawmill and the paper plant on the attic. The module will feature three connections, one AmericaN and two AmericaN iNdustries.

An den noch offenen Abgang kommt der von der MR bediente Dicalite-Anschließer zur Hopperbeladung mit der Andeutung eines Steinbruchs in Cayton.

To the third connection I will attach a small Dicalite Quarry module.

Zu Hause wird Burney Splice links, mit der Wye, an die Paper Mill angeschlossen, im Norden wird das fremo-AmericaN-iNdustries-Modul Cayton Dicalite Quarry angeschlossen und im Süden Die Fremo-AmericaN-Module Shaste Transition, Lake Britton Bridge und die McCloud Sawmill.

On my home layout Burney Splice will be connected with the paper plant with the left wye. The northbound connection will feature the quaary and the southern connection connects to the "mainline" to the sawmill.

Burney Splice zeigt typischen Übergang von der Mainline auf eine Shortline, bzw. eine Industrie. Dargestellt wird ein kleiner Highway mit Bahnübergang, ein paar Geschäfteund ein Diner. Als Landschaftsausgangspunkt dienen wiederum die Wälder around McCloud :)

Burney Splice will show a typical transfer scene from branchline to industrial tracks. There will be a highway crossing the tracks, a Diner, a general store and a hardware show.

N-Scale McCloud Sawmill Layout Plan

Als ich schon mal dabei war für die Paper Mill das Layout in Anyrail zu ertsellen, habe ich direkt auch für die anderen Moudle/Segmente layouts erstellt. Hiermeine SPI - McCloud Sawmill.

While I designed the layout plan for the paper mill I created one for the saw mill, too.

Um die 90° abzuschließen werde ich noch ein kleines Kurvenmodul bauen was in etwas so aussehen wird:

Auf beiden Seiten versuche ich AmericaN-Modulübergänge anzusetzen, falls es nicht geht, wird das Modul zu Segment #3 der McCloud Sawmill.

Es wird mal wieder Zeit für ein paar News. McCloud wurde weiter bearbeitet, der Cut hat eine Deckschicht bekommen und das Sägewerk nimmt Form an.

I updated the McCloud saw mill once more. The canyon moudle received a first cover. 

Das Modul trägt den Name "CALPA - Burney Paper Mill & Storage Yard". CALPA ist eine Fiktive Firmengruppe: California Paper Alliance.

Das Modul ist nach der Fremo-AmericaN-iNdustries-Norm gebaut und kann so auf meinem Dachboden und auch bei Fremo-Treffen eingesetzt werden.

I will use this module on my attic as well as on Fremo meetings.

Ich versuche einen realen Betrieb nachzuempfinden, daher wird auch ein kleiner Storage Yard angeschlossen. Als Frachtgüter werden Chemikalien als Additive (Flüssig, Fest), Holzstämme, Woodchips, aber auch Kohle und Recyclingpapier benötigt.

I will try to model a realtisc operation with additive chemicals (liquid & bulk), wood (logs & woodchips), recycled paper and coal.

Als ausgehende Frachten sind natürlich frisches Papier (auf Rollen oder Packed) und giftige chemische Rückstände (flüssig) vorhanden.
