Busy weekend with updates

A very busy weekend showed up some results.

Am Wochenende wurde trotz vieler Termine reichlich an den Modulen gearbeitet.

I ballastet the last 50cm of the paper mill with two different kinds 8and colours) of ballast for main line and spurs.

Endlich konnte ich die letzten 50cm der Papierfabrik einschottern.

The chemicals unloading dock was placed on the module to check the dimensions.

Ich habe die Entladeeinrichtung mal probeweise aufs modul gestellt um die Maßstäbe richtig abzupassen.

I clamped an old TT backdrop to the module to see if the colours (faded from grey to blue) match.

Bei dieser Gelegenheit habe ich dann mal eine alten American TT-Hintergrund ans Moudl geklemmt.

The wooden back wall of the coal unloading terminal was placed and glued to the module. The sytrene only wall was much to unstable.

Die hölzerne Rückwand für die Kohlenentladung wurde ausgerichtet und aufgeklebt. Die Kunststoffplatten waren zu fragil und würde einen Transport auf dem Modul wohl nicht überleben.

A few from a cable bridge with GEVOs on the main an the coal unloading terminal on the left. The first piece of wall is painted (air brush) in a dark grey. On the ground the last cm needs some concrete colour. The wooden piles are only a skeleton for the styrene sheets.

Die sich von eine Kabelbrücke auf zwei GE Gevos auf der Hauptstrecke und dem Kohleterminal auf der linken Seite. Das erste Stück wand ist bereits grau lackiert. Es fehlt noch der untereste cm in Zementfarbe für das Fundament. Die Holzstützen verschwinden hinter Kunststoffplatten und dienen nur als Skelett.

While I had my ballasting set on the desk I ballasted the rest of the yard (again with two types of ballast)

Da das Schottermaterial eh grade auf dem Tisch lag habe ich den Rest des Yards noch eingeschottert.


The yard also received some scenery basics.

Am Yard wurden die erste Landschaftsbauten vorgenommen.

Hot glue an paper board is the first level.

Heißkleber und Pappstreifen bilden die erste Schicht.

Newspaper, plaster bandages and plaster were applied to the modules to create some landscape.

Auf die Pappstreifen kam eine Schicht aus in Wasser/Weissleim getränktem Zeitungspapier. Anschließend wurden Gipsbandage überlappend aufgebracht. den Abschluss bildet eine Schicht aus feinem Modelliergips.

Also I testet all DCC fascia panels and some cables with my self built Loconet tester.

Außerdem habe ich noch alle DCC-Einbaupanels mit einem selbstgebauten DCC-Tester geprüft.

Paper Mill - ballast for the tracks

Gut motiviert habe ich in den letzten Tagen etwas an der Paper Mill weiter gebaut.

The last hot and rainy days I spent some time on continuing work on the paper mill.

Das erste Gleis innerhalb der paper mill wurde eingeschottert. Hierbei kam der Gleisschotter von Woodland in fine grey blend zum Einsatz. Das Ergebnis siehr sehr gut aus. Die Schienen für den Log unloader wurden bei dieser Gelegenheit ebenfalls aufgeklebt.

The first track inside the paper mill was ballasted. I used woodland scenics grey blend ballast in fine. I like the realisitc apperance. I also added the rails for the log unloader.

Nach ein paar Tagen sah der rechte Teil der paper mill dann in etwas so aus. Rechts der Kohle entlade Teil mit den im Beton versenkten Gleisen. Dieser Teil hat bereits die erste Fabrschicht Concrete erhalten. Daneben dann der Abzweig zum Rotary Dumper. Die main line in der Mitte liegt entsprechend der AmericaN-Norm in ASOA Diabas Gleisschotter. Rechts der main das Gleis zum Log debarker für die Holzstämme. Links der main der Anschluss der einzelnen Spots. Ganz vorne die Kunststpoffstreifen am Modulübergang wo eine Straße die Gleise kreutzt.

After a few days of work the eastern park of the paper mill looked like this. On the far right you can see the coal unloading track running in concrete. Next to the coal track there is the woodchip unloading track running to the rotary dumper. The main in the middle is ballasted with ASOA Diabas ballast according to the Fremo AmericaN Standard, while all other tracks are ballasted with Woodlands ballast. On the right hand of th emain line there is the log unloading track, while the left track servers the single spots. In the front you can see the white styrene strips at the module transition.

More mill work

Beim letzten Post fehlten noch zwei weitere Bilder.

At my last post two more pictures were missing.

Gleise mit woodland Rost-Stift gealtert, Chemikalienanlieferung mit Modelliergips gestaltet, HO Tanks zersägt und angepasst.

Rails weathered with woodland rust painters (the colour on the picture ist to red, the real colour is more brown), new fine plaster for the chemicals reloading and some cut down HO tanks..

Ich bin auch endlich dazu gekommen die Öffnunf für den rotary dumper zu sägen.

New concrete for the mill

Da mich mein Job mal wieder extrem anstrengend war, musste die Moba leider etwas zurück stecken. Aber auch kleine Schritte führen zum Erfolg. Also ging es darum eine große Fläche zu "zementieren".

My job took nearly all of my free time and kept me from working on the layout. But also small steps are even steps. The project was to build a huge "concrete" ground for the buildings of the main mill.

Als erste habe ich Evergreen Kunststoffstreifen aufgeklebt, um nach dem Gießen des Modelliergipses glatte Auflageflächen zu haben.

At first a glued some 1.6mm evergreen styreen strips to the wood to get exact borders for the modellin gplaster.

Weichen mussten extra geschützt werden.

Turn outs needed some extra protection.

Nach dem Gießen und abzeihen des Modelliergipses war eine schöne stabile Fläche entstanden.

After applying the modelling plaster a new solid leveled basement was created.

Back to the paper mill

Meine Zeit fürs Hobby ist im Moment noch weiter geschrumpft. Zum Glück hatte ich ein paar Minuten, um das Kohleentladungsgleis in den Beton zu versenken. Über dem Gleiskommt noch ein Gebäude, daher konnte ich hier testen, wie es sich mit Gips, Kunststoffstreiben und Farbe arbeiten lässt.

My job keeps me very busy theses days. There is only very little time left for the hobby. I finnaly took the chance and put so rails into concrete. The concrete will be covered with building, so I can practise.

Ich habe aus 1,5mm Profilen einen Rahmen gebaut und diesen dann mit Motofil Spachtel ausgegossen. Anschließeden habe ich die Oberfläche mit Schirgelpapier abgeschliffen.

I built a frame of 1.5mm styrene strips und filled it with fluid plaster. After it was dry I used sanding paper to smooth it.

Dann wurde die Oberfläche mit Woodland street concrete bemalt.

Then I painted the ground with woodland concrete.

Nachdem die Farbe trocken war, muss ich feststellen, dass die Farbe streifen gezogen hatte. Also werde ich wohl noch einmal mit dem Schleifpaper drüber gehen und die Farbe dann verdünnt mit einer Rolle auftragen.

After the paint was dry I noticed that some the paint in combination with the brush created some streaks. So I have to sand off again and then paint with a paint roller and thin the paint.

New buldings

Es sind auch mal wieder ein paar Bausätze eingetroffen. Aus einem Teil eines Cornerstone Bausatzes wird ein Gebäude zum entladen von Pulverförmigen Chemikalien in Säcken oder Fässern. Die restlichen Wände werden für eine alte Lagerhalle verwendet.

Some new building kits arrived. I'll build an unloading facility for bulk chemicals packed in barrels or bags. The unsed walls will be used for a background ware house.

 

Ich habe die Maschinenhalle mit den Rolltoren für die Kaolinanlieferung und die Maschinenersatzteilversorgung aus Pappe gebaut. Diese Gebäude entstehen dann später aus Evergreen Platten.

I built these cardboard mock ups to see how the new paper machine building with the kaolin track and the machine supply track look like. I will build this structure with evergreen styrene walls.

control rods & module legs

Am Tag der deutschen Einheit hatte ich mal wieder ein wenig Zeit um an den Modulen zu bauen.

On the Tag der deutschen Einheit, a public holiday, I had some time to continue finishing work on the paper mill modules to allow a functional operation session test.

Alle Papierwerk Module wurden mit Stellstangen für die blue points ausgerüstet.

All paper mill module were equipped with control rods.

Das Papierwerk besitztz nur nur noch zwei 30cm und zwei 50cm breite Beine. Eine Reduktion von 50% gegenüber BPM 1.0.

The paper mill now has only two 30cm and two 50cm wide legs. This is a reduction of 50% from the first paper mill.

Hier mal die Ansicht auf das fertige Modul mit allen Weichenstellhebeln, kompletter Verkabelung, Loconet-Panels und in der Höhe (128cm-133cm) verstellbaren Beinen.

Mill progress

Zur Zeit gibts auf der Arbeit wieder viel zu tun. Dahe rgibt es nur kleine Fortschritte. Ich habe am yard und der Papermill die Aufnahme für die Weichenstellhebel vorbereitet.

There is much to do at the office so only little time for the hobby. I continued the work on the fascia.

A Place for the Dumper

Da der Rotary Dumper nun von seinen Grundmaßen her gebaut ist, wurde das Gleis positioniert. Um weiterhin Wagen vor dem Pulversilo und am Dumper entkuppeln zu können, wurden einige Gebäude neu platziert. Das Woodchip silo wanderte an die rechte Seite des linken 90cm Moduls um den Zugriff auf das bulk additive track nicht mehr zu versperren. Dafür muss das Förderband um zwei Elemente verlängert werden. Da vom Woodchip Silo auch ein Förderband zur kraft mill führen muss, wurden das alte Kraftwerk und die kraft mill getauscht. Die prelubrication wurde um 30cm nach links zwischen altem Kraftwerk und kraft mill verschoben. Das Förderband über die Gleis emusste ebenfalls um ein Element verlängert werden. Das gesamte Werk bekommt noch einen blauen Hintergrund. (sry für das schlechte Bild)

After der basic rotary dumper was built I positioned the dumper track. Some buildings were move to give the operator an easy acess to the bulk additive track. I will make more detailled descriptions when I continue with the construction. Sorry for the bad picture :/

Main mill finished

Nachdem die Module 3 und 4 fertig verdrahtet waren, wurde direkt der erste Funktionstest durchgeführt. Bei dieser Gelegenheit konnte auch das kurze Watertreatment Modul getestet werden.

After modules 3 and 4 were completly wired I performed a first complete test ride. The test also included the Burney water treatment module.

Paper mIll module 3

Modul 3 des Papierwerks wurde fertig verkabelt und durchgemessen, um Kurzschlüsse und tote Versorgungsstellen zu entdecken. Das Modul ist nun Einsatzbereit.

Das Modul wurde mit den Module 1+2 verbunden. Das rechte Bein wird wenn Modul 4 angehängt wird noch um eine Strebe nach innen verschoben.

Module 3 is noch conneted with modules 1 and 2. The module 3 stand will move a little bit more to the left when the 4th module is attached.

Paper Mill wiring

Am Wochenende konnte ich dann auch die erste beiden Module des Papierwerks fertig verkabeln. Alle Weichen sind sperat mit Strom versorgt - Alle Modulübergänge ebenfalls. Die Weichen werden mit blue points gestellt und polarisiert.

On the weekend I could finish wiring the first two paper mill modules. All turn outs and PCB ties (at the module connections) are powered seperately to garantee a good power supply.

Nachdem das Modul auf Kurzschlüsse und Kontakt überprüft wurde, habe ich die beiden ersten Module miteinander verbunden und auf die Beide gestellt. Durch die neue Konstruktion können 1,5m Modul mit einem 30cm und einem 50cm breiten Bein sicher getragen werden.

After checking for shorts and an all over power supply check I connected the first two modules and mounte the stands. With the new construction I only need a 30cm and one 50cm wide stand for a safe position.

Letztendlich hab eich dann eine Testlok auf die Gleise gesetzt und eine ausgiebige Probefahrt gemacht. So wurden die Modulübergänge, die Weichen und deren Polarisierung, und die Stromversorgung der Gleise getestet.

I then finally used a loco to check the module interconnections and to see if all tracks ar epowered and all switches work.

Wo ich grade dabei war, habe ich dann auch begonnen am dritten Modul blue points zu montieren und die Gleise anzuschließen.

While I was working I began mounting blue points and soldering wires to the tracks on module #3.

Paper mill the next steps

Endlich habe ich den Schritt gewagt und die einzelnen Module der Paper Mill getrennt. Hierzu habe ich überall wo es möglich war mit einer 0,3mm Trennscheiben die Schiene entweder direkt getrennt oder einen Anschnitt gemacht. Da fast alle Gleise, und damit auch die Modulübergänge,  diagonal auf dem Module liegen wurde dann die Atlas/Roco Gleissäge verwendet um alle Gleise zu trennen. Das hat zum Glück sehr gut funktioniert. Nach dem Trennen habe ich alle Gleisübergänge mit einer Gondola langsam mit schneller, als auch langsamer, Überfahrt getestet.

Finally I did the next step and divided the paper mill modules. I used a 0,mm cutting disc and a kind of dremel tool mit extension. Not all rails could be cut with the tool because the disc has only a diameter of 20mm. So I cutted all rails as deep as I could without sloping the disc and then used the atlas / roco rail saw. After the dividing I testet the transitions with a gondola.

Danach ging es dann ans Verkabeln des ersten Moduls. Strom wird in jede Weiche eingespeist. Alle Gleise sind mit Schienenverbindern verbunden. An Modulkanten wird noch einmal an den Leiterplattenschwellen eingespeist.

After the dividing I wired the first module. All switches are powered exclusevely. All rails are conneted with joiners. Additionally all PCB ties on the module edges are powered.

Auf der rechten Seite werden noch die Sicherheitsstecker für einen normkonformen Übergang montiert. Auf der linken Seite habe ich einen XLR-Stecker für die elektrische Verbindung innerhalb des Moduls verwendet. Der Strom wird mit Messingrohren durch das Modul geführt. An die Messingrohre sind auch die einzlnen Einspeisungen und die blue points, als manuelle Weichensteller, angeschlossen. Auf der linken Seite sieht man ebenfalls zwei Zentrierstifte welche die ausrichtung des Moduls extrem erleichtern. die Mittelquerstrebe wird benötigt um beim Transport genügend stabilität zu erhalten, außerdem wird dort auch ein Modulbein befestigt.

On the right side the safety connectors to others modules are still missing. While on the left side a XLR-connector is used for inner module power transfer. I used brass pipes form the electric power supply. A newrail blue point turn out controller is used for manual turn out control. On the left side (in the middle) there are two adjusting dowels for an easier rail2rail alignment. The division bar is needed for structural strength while transport and to mount the module legs while a meeting.

Mill Progress

Nachdem alle Gleise und Weiche der main mill verlegt waren war ich wieder shoppen. Holz für zwei yard modulkäste und für Lookout junction geholt.

After all tracks and turn outs were layed I went to my local home depot to shop some new wood for more modules. The next two modules will be the Burney Storage Yard and Lookout Junction.

Am vorderen Rand des Bildes ist die letzte Weiche der main mill zu sehen. Dahinter kommt dann erst einmal BWT. Dahinter liegen die beiden Basismodule für den Yard. Die Brücke liegt bereits an ihrer Position. An den Yard schließt sich dann Lookout Junction an.

This picture shows the work for the next two weeks. Let's start with the last turn out of the main mill. After this there is the tiny water treatment module with only 30cm. The next two modules are the storage yard with the bridge over the burney river. In the background are the module boxes for lookout junction.

Um etwas mehr gefühl für die Gleislängen im Yard zu bekommen habe ich die Einfahrtsweichenstraße mal aufgelegt.

To check if the yard length is suitable form my home layout configuration I put some turn outs on the box.

track work on the main paper mill complex finished

Gestern war am Abend leider nur kurz Zeit am Modul zu arbeiten, aber es hat sich gelohnt. Es wurden nun alle restlichen Gleise aufs Modulgeklebt und verlötet. Alle Weichen haben nun eine eigene Stromversorgung und sind ebenfalls fixiert. Nach dem aushärten wurde bei den Weichen die Funktion geprüft.

Yesterday I could only spend a little time on the module, but it was enough to finish the track work on the main complex module.  Also all turn outs are in place and are all seperately powered.

Der Rotary Dumper ist leider immer noch nicht eingetroffen, daher fehlt noch das dumper Gleis.

The Rotary Dumper parts haven't still arrived yet, so the dumper tracks is still waiting for some rails.

Die Modulkästen sind bei BPM 2.0 aus 10mm Pappel und haben Querstreben zur Versteifung (auch die kleine 30*60cm Kästen!).

The module boxes are made of 10mm poplar wood and have crossbars. Even the small 30*60cm boxes have one crossbar to protect them from squeezing.

Burney paper mill first tracks

Am Wochenende ging es frisch ans Werk. Da der Rotary dumper immer noch nicht angekommen ist wurde das Dumper Gleis noch nicht gelegt.

The last weekend I started laying the track on the paper mill main complex modules. The rotary dumper that I drew in CAD orogram and sent to a laser cut company hasn't still arrived, so I skipped the dumpertrack and have to wait until the dumper arrives.

 

Es wurden alle Flexgleis auf Maß geschnitten und die Leiterplattenschwellen mit Zweikomponentenkleber aufgeklebt.

All flex tracks were cut to the exact lenght. Also the PCB-ties were glued to the module box.

  

Am Ende des Tages waren alle Gleise und Weichen bis zum oberen Bildrand verklebt, angelötet und elektrisch angeschlossen.

At the end of the day all tracks and turn outs up to the upper corner of this picture were glued, soldered and electrically connected.

N Scale Burney Paper Mill track plan

Die Konstruktionstechnischen Probleme der ersten Burney Paper Mill sorgten für einiges nachdenken bei mir. Nachdem fest stand, dass ich die paper mill noch einmal neu aufbauen würde, wurden möglichst viele Kritikpunkte angenommen und Lösungen geschaffen.

The mechanical problems of the first burney paper mill raised the idea in me to rebuild it and try to make it better. So here ist my track plan with many improvements.

Die paper mill wurde in drei Modulgruppen geteilt. Der main mill complex ist nun auch stand alone fähig und besitzt Fremo - AmericaN - iNdustries-Übergänge. Die Wassertanks und Becken wurden auf ein seperates Modul gesetzt, ebenso der storage yard. Für den yard gibt es auch noch ein 90cm Erweiterung für den Frmeo-Einsatz. Diese Konzeption erlaubt es auch die Wassertanks und den storage yard im Westen der mill anzuschließen oder auch alle Module eigenständig zu verwenden.

The paper mill was devided into three single groups. The first group ist the main mill complex with all the spots. the second module is just a piece of track used as a switching lead. At least there is the storage yard. the yard was upgraded with two additional arrival/departure tracks. All three sections can be used independent.

Second start of my n scale Burney Paper Mill

Gestern ging es in die zweite Runde für die Paper mill. Die Modulkästen wurden untereinander verbunden und plan geschliffen. Das Recycling Terminal schließt nun die Mill ab, so dass der Yard getrennt werdne kann. Plan folgt später.

Yesterday I started with  my second try of my n scale Burney Paper Mill. All mein module boxes are now connected with each other and the borders were sanded.

 

Auf diesem Bild sieht mann die beiden Main Mill Module zusammen mit dem neuen 60 * 30cm  Rycycling Paper Terminal. Mit Klemmzwingen ist zu Transportzwecken noch das neue 30 * 30 cm Modul für die Wassertanks befestigt.

In the picture you can see both main mill modules and the new 30 * 60 cm (about 1 foot by two) module for the recycling paper terminal. The clamps hold the new 30 * 30cm module for the seperated water tanks.

Ich habe mal die Weichen aufgelegt. Das Material ist komplett Atlas N Code 55. Für den yard fehlen mir leider noch ein paar Weichen. Ich hoffe das Atlas irgendwann mal liefert.

I lay the turn outs on the boxes to see If my concept works. Turn outs and track are Atlas N Code 55. Some turn outs for the mill storage yard are still missing. I hope Atlas can delivery some ne turn outs in the future.
